Free Dancing

We are having great fun running the three weekly dance sessions. Thank you for all the great feedback J Please let us know if there is anything we can do to improve them.

But it would be great if we had a few more dancers at each of the sessions. If you haven?t been for a while, why not try it again, soon?

In order to get even more people involved we are applying for Community Grants in Ashford and Maidstone for the afternoon dances. This will allow us to run about 10 free sessions in the Autumn at each venue, and also to advertise the sessions widely through the local press. If we get the grants then the sessions will be free for everyone ? current dancers and new dancers!

PLEASE HELP US!

If you are in Maidstone, please go to https://democracy.kent.gov.uk/mgMemberIndex.aspx?FN=WARD&VW=LIST&PIC=0 and click on the name of your local councillor, then click on their e-mail address and send them a note telling them how great this type of dancing is and asking them to support John Sweeney?s request to them for a ?Community Grant for Community Dance Sessions?. I have included a copy of the e-mail that we sent to the Maidstone councillors at the bottom of this note. If you can get support from any of the councillors outside Maidstone, e.g. Malling, please let me know and I will add them to the distribution list.

Thanks!

Note to Maidstone Councillors:

Community Grant for Community Dance Sessions

Dear Maidstone Councillors,

My wife and I have been dancing and teaching people how to dance all of our lives. We would love to get more people dancing in Maidstone.

When the English Folk Dance & Song Society started publishing the ?Community Dances Manuals? in 1947 it helped to get tens of thousands of people dancing and socialising. Sadly this type of dancing is not as widespread now as it used to be.

We are seeking a community grant to provide free community dance sessions for the people of Maidstone so that they can experience these wonderful dances and help to build better communities. This type of dancing is great fun and also contributes to a healthy life style and helps people of all ages to get fit and stay fit. It also teaches people to work together, helps them to develop their social skills, and builds their confidence.

We believe that this type of dancing should be provided as one of the pastimes and activities that allow residents of the county to enjoy life, and be part of the cultural renaissance in the county.

We understand that you have some money available for community grants. If just two of you could provide grants of ?500 each that would enable us to advertise and run around nine free afternoon dance sessions in the Hazlitt Arts Centre?s Exchange Studio.

We currently run a small dance session for people over 50 every Tuesday afternoon in the Exchange Studio. We would now like to reach more people of all ages. We dance from 2pm to 3:30pm and you would be very welcome to visit us there.

The dancing covers a wide range of wonderful dances, from 17th Century Jane Austen style dances to 21st Century Ceilidh Dances, including American Contra Dance, English Barn Dance, Contra Waltzing and the Polka!

Please could you let me know if you or any of your colleagues would be able to help us with this venture?

Thank you.
