Going Out
with a Bang!
Sidmouth FolkWeek (3rd - 10th August)
draws to a close tomorrow night - and we're going out with a bang! The
spectacular torchlight procession and firework display along the esplanade will
bring a wonderful week of festive musical celebration to a dramatic close
(10-11pm) as thousands.
As well
as a visual climax, we go out on a musical high as Irish legends Donal
Lunny, Padraig Rynne & Sylvain Barou light up the Ham Marquee with their musical
wizardry - 7.30pm on Friday 10th. Donal
Lunny has been at the forefront of Irish music for decades, as founding member
of seminal folk bands like Planxty, The Bothy Band and Moving Hearts and young
players Padraig
Rynne (concertina) & Sylvain Barou (Breton
flute) are both current mover and shakers in Celtic music scene.
The week
has been a resounding success - with busy venues, packed streets and happy
festival go-ers. Just some of the highlights have included?
?the
emotional return of singer Norma Waterson to performing
after a prolonged illness. She was greeted with a full-house and standing
ovation before and after her wonderful
performance with daughter Eliza Carthy and The Gift Band. Artistic
Director Alan Bearman cites Norma's return as a "great triumph of the week."
?the
high-energy Treacherous Orchestra whipping up a
dancing frenzy at the Bulverton Festival Clubhouse with their massive Celtic
wall of sound. Thanks to Creative Scotland's input with this show as well as
support for range of young rising stars like Rura through to visits from
the likes of Archie Fisher.
?the
hysterical street theatre act Granny Turismo roaring through
the streets on their motorized shopping trollies.
? a
fantastic sell-out pre-festival special War Horse
- The Concert with Michael Morpurgo and John Tams
& Barry Coope.
?workshops
galore: massed ranks of ukuleles (over 80!), a massive Spoons Orchestra,
singing frenzies at the Big Sing and Spooky Men choirmaster Stephen Taberner's
workshops?
? a
welcome international flavour with Karelian dancers from Russian/Finnish borders
and the incredible Black Umfolosi from Zimbabwe
? Olympic
standard dancing at the John Gasson Jig Competition and Morris
Offspring's Must Come Down show.
?
crowd-pleasing ceilidh act Tickled Pink rocking out the Late Night Extra.
?fantastic
venues?as well as the impressive main marquees, the welcome home for
traditional song, music and storytelling at the Woodlands Hotel, the intimate
cabaret-style shows at Kennaway House and a wonderful spanking new social dance
venue at Stowford Rise Community Centre.
All this
plus countless more events - from informal concerts and sessions, impromptu
displays, fabulous children's events and an special Sidmouth atmosphere that
pulls people back to the festival year after year.
John
Braithwaite, Festival Director, said of the week: "How can it be over already?
Such a lovely 58th festival
- so many high spots and find memories. It's been a vintage year!"
