Portland Folk Club presents Tom Paley's Old-Time Moonshine Revue, live at the
Golden Hind, Milton Rd., Cambridge at 7.30pm on Sun 30th Sept.

A founding member of the influential New Lost City Ramblers in the late 1950s,
Tom Paley has long been a key figure on the folk scene. He played with Woody
Guthrie and Leadbelly in his youth, and taught Ry Cooder and Jerry Garcia. Bob
Dylan cites him as a major influence. On his latest album, "Tom Paley's Old-
Time Moonshine Revue", Tom recorded with several up-and-coming British folk
musicians, who accompany him on this tour. With Robin Gillan on fiddle and
harmonica, Jason Steel on guitar and dobro and Jonny Bridgwood on bass, this
promises to be a rollicking evening of fun and lively old-timey music. Tom
himself will be showcasing his well-renowned talents on vocals, guitar and
banjo as well as his wicked sense of humour.

For those of you who knew him but have yet to hear from other sources, I
regret to pass on the news that one of our early members, Rob Tyler known to
many as "Cream", died recently in a traffic accident.

Annie Warner writes on Facebook:

"We used to love it when he came to Sacrewell Farm for Summer Camp for Old
Time Music and Dance. 25 years ago he came weekly to our music session and was
the life and soul of it. His musical friends loved him too and will miss him
dreadfully. I have admired him for 25 years. He was vegan and did not just
slink out of a decent real ale pub that did not do vegetarian food but stood
his ground and talked to them in a way that often meant there was a nice
edible meal waiting for him next time in village pubs near Sacrewell Farm,
near Peterborough and the surrounding villages."

And also if you use Facebook, Annie says "PLEASE go to his page and tell his
daughter you are sorry. She is using his page as a way of collecting comments
from people who will miss him."

Anne Steel of ? Maui Waui Design in Norfolk has designed a range of new
bluegrass T-shirts in black and white, printed on heavyweight premium-quality
'Fruits of the Loom' T-shirts, and featuring most of the bluegrass instruments
(banjo, guitar, fiddle, mandolin).

Anne is a graphic designer and illustrator who has been designing products and
illustrations for the gift trade and other businesses for over twenty-five
years. This range of bluegrass designs is a result of her passion for
bluegrass and country music and wanting to design the kind of T-shirt that she
would like to buy.

She is currently working on more designs to add to this range and other
bluegrass/country music designs, so please keep checking the website:

Halesworth Arts Festival in conjunction with Maverick Festival present a
diverse gathering of American roots artists who will lead us on a journey
across North America on the night of Friday October 26th.

Alice Gerrard and Beverly Smith will begin by recreating traditional folk
songs whose honesty and simplicity have been inspiring generations of
musicians ever since they were first brought down from the mountains of
Appalachia.

The young South African born singer/songwriter Gregory Alan Isakov will share
the personal poetry of his past filtered through his experiences as an
immigrant in Colorado.

With echoes of their predecessors with roots in the Bay area, the all-female
country rock band Blame Sally will bring us to the end of the trail by adding
their West Coast sensibility to this rich and endless tapestry of music.

The traditions of the past are re-visited and re-invented by three generations
of musicians on their own musical odyssey.

Reinhard Gress forwards the following:

Kerry Blech, who has given us all so much in the realms of old time music,
inspiration, understanding, and courage, needs our help. Kerry was recently
(and suddenly) diagnosed with lymphoma and is currently undergoing treatments.
He has no insurance, and as we all know, the costs of uninsured treatments can
be more crippling than the disease itself. We are all too aware of the musical
poverty that would be our lot were it not for the mentorship and guidance that
Kerry has so kindly and generously provided through all these good long
years.....Let's band together now and show Kerry how much we love and
appreciate him, and how much his presence and musical influence has meant to
our world.
