March: Songs by the Fireside 2-5pm, Frittenden Old Fashioned
Night Out barn dance 8-11pm
Sunday 2nd
March (tomorrow night) will see us back at the Gun at Horsmonden for
our usual First Sunday Tunes Session from 8pm.
If you haven't been before, you can expect a mix of mainly English
tunes, including a good helping of the tunes we've been working at
the Wednesday night classes, other favourites and anything else
whatever people bring along. This is a free and informal
event in the bar, and open to all.
And on Tuesday we have another of our free workshops concentrating on
traditional and old fashioned songs led by both Julie (a formally
trained singer) and myself. The aim is to help singers become more
confident, help them to be heard and make a musical sound, and tell
their story effectively.
The next twice monthly tunes workshop at the Gun and Spitroast,
Horsmonden (TN12 8HT) is on the 12th February (the second Wednesday,
as usual). The aim now (and for the following workshop) is to practice
tunes for out big night (and day) on the 29th of March - there is a draft tunes list to practice
on the workshops page of the website. I will make a YouTube of The
Redwing shortly.
Regulars will know this is a popular and fun evening for young and
old, and that it might well be worth buying tickets in advance,
particularly if you'd like to bring family members.
On this occasion the dance in the evening to the music of the tunes
workshop will feature Fee Lock
calling, together with the singing and playing of the mighty Matt Quinn!
Of course we'd like to have as many music workshop folks as possible
in the band in the evening. There's no pressure or embarrassment if
you don't know some of the tunes - just slipping away to dance, chat
or get a drink while the others get on with the music is fine with
everyone else, and so is coming back and playing the next tune.
There's also be an afternoon event from 2pm featuring songs from the
excellent talents of Peter
Collins (Beacon Folk Club),
John
Morgan, Nigel
Hobbins (of Whitstable Folk Club) and Annie Dearman and Steve
Harrison during the afternoon. I'm looking
forward to a great day.
We'll no doubt chip in with a few songs ourselves - and we'd really
like to include items from members of the song workshop, so we'll
talk about that in detail when that group meets on the 4th March.
Information about the 29th March, a poster (please print it out and
put in any suitable noticeboard or window) can be found on the Singdanceandplay website.
PS - Please
pass this on to anyone you know who would be interested and who may
not be on our mailing list.
PPS
- We notice our friend Roy
Clinging is playing at the Beacon Folk Club
on the 10th March. That'll worth going to as well...
