EXPLORING THE ART OF SONG, STORY AND FOLKLORE COLLECTING

Following the huge success of our first conference in 2013, The Song Collectors Collective is delighted to present this one-day event of talks, presentations and performances covering the practicalities, ethics, histories and art of contemporary song collecting. A unique opportunity to explore the origins of folk song, learn about the conservation of oral culture and celebrate the gems on your doorstep and beyond!

Featuring:

Reg Hall - recording Maggie Barry, Michael Gorman and the singers and musicians of the London Irish sessions.

Angela Impey - collecting Dinka songs of the cattle camps of South Sudan

John Howson & Michael Sheehy - 'Out of the box!', John has collected music and song throughout Britain and Ireland for many years and is now recording accordion player Michael Sheehy's enormous repertoire of Sliabh Luachra dance music passed down through his family.

Tony Robertson - Tony has inherited the Scottish Traveller songs of his father Stanley Robertson, who was recorded by Sam Lee and shared through the Song Collectors website.

Nan Connors - In 2012, Sam Lee and James McDonald recorded the songs and reminiscences of Nan in her home in County Wexford. Nan comes from and Irish Traveller background and remembers the old ways of being on the road and sharing songs with friends and family - not to mention many of the old dances! Nan will be in conversation with James McDonald.

Jerry O'Reilly - Jerry will be giving a talk on the Child Ballads that are sung in the Irish

Sam Lee - singer and SCC founder, Sam will give an introductory workshop on how to start collecting songs

Talks will also be given by some of the participants of the current Song Catchers project involving songs being collected from various communities in London.

The day will finish with a concert with the invited singers and musicians.

This event is part of a collaboration between the Song Collectors Collective and The Endangered Languages Archive at SOAS and is supported by Creative Works London's creative vouchers scheme for Archives.

The Song Collectors Collective is a group of volunteers with an active passion to conserve the rare and ancient oral culture of the world. We are recording and publishing the tradition bearers who still keep our ancient sung and spoken arts alive within their own families and communities. This work includes researching, field recording, audio editing, cataloguing, indexing, as well as publishing to the web, and subsequent promotion and distribution of the freely available archive to help keep the tradition alive. You can find many of these recordings and lots more information on our website: www.songcollectors.org

The Endangered Language ARchive (ELAR) is a digital repository specialising in preserving and publishing endangered language documentation materials from around the world. We are a small team of highly specialised archivists, data scientists, audiovisual experts, and linguists, pioneering in the areas of user interface, managed access and accessibility. The archive contains approximately 6500 hours of audio and video from 140 collections from around the world.
