English Folk Dance and Song Society invites bursary & creative artist residency applications

The English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS) has opened applications for its 2014 round of creative artist residencies and a special bursary in memory of North East songwriter, Graeme Miles.

Creative Artist Residencies

The creative artist residencies are open to professional artists from all genres to research and develop new work linked to the folk arts at Cecil Sharp House in London. Awards are made annually and applications are invited from individuals or groups including dancers, poets, storytellers, musicians or visual artists.

The creative artist residencies are part of EFDSS' Aspire Programme, supported by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, that provides artistic support and professional development to artists.

The residencies include the use of rehearsal rooms at Cecil Sharp House (but not include 24 hour storage space); a grant of up to £2,000 to cover costs and expenses; performance space for sharing the results; and support for future development of the

work.

Application information

The deadline for submitted applications is 10pm on Monday 2 June, for residencies to be taken between September 2014 and March 2015.

For guidelines about applying for a creative residency and applications forms go to www.efdss.org/efdss-artists-development/artists-bursaries.

Completed applications can be returned via email to neil_at_efdss_dot_org or to Cecil Sharp House, 2 Regent's Park Road, London, NW1 7AY.

The successful candidates will be announced early July.

The Graeme Miles Bursary

This special bursary is in memory of Middlesbrough singer songwriter Graeme Miles, who died in April last year. It is a one-off award of up £1,200 to an artist or group, aged 18 to 25, based in the North East of England, with a particular preference to those based in Teeside.

The aim is to fund an important development opportunity, project or programme of activity that will have a lasting impact on their career. Uses for the bursary could include touring support, an artistic collaboration with other musicians, paying for recording costs, mentoring, funding an industry showcase or buying a new instrument

Application information:

The application criteria is for individual musicians including composers and groups who are in the early stages of their professional career or final stages of advanced musical training with a genuine commitment to build a professional career in music

For more information or to apply, go to www.efdss.org/efdss-artists-development/artists-bursaries.

The deadline for submitted applications is 10pm on Monday June 2. The successful candidate/s will be announced by Monday July 12.

Completed applications can be returned via email to neil_at_efdss_dot_org or to Cecil Sharp House, 2 Regent's Park Road, London, NW1 7AY.

Neil Pearson, EFDSS' Artist Development and Programming Manager, said: "Both schemes offer an important opportunity for personal development. The creative residencies are an interesting way for artists from a variety of fields to explore the folk arts and create new work.

"The Graeme Miles bursary is a fitting testament to a fitting memorial to a songwriter who has helped to influence many musicians over the years."

NOTES TO EDITORS

  1. About the English Folk Dance and Song Society The English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS) was established in 1932 by the merger of the Folk-Song Society, founded in 1898, and the English Folk Dance Society, founded by Cecil Sharp in 1911. As the national development organisation for the folk arts, EFDSS aims to place the traditional arts of England at the heart of our cultural life - preserving, protecting, disseminating and promoting English traditional folk arts. Since its beginnings EFDSS has been supporting artists and practitioners, engaging people in folk arts activities, and raising the profile of English traditional folk arts. This is currently achieved through programmes of performance, participation and education at EFDSS' London venue, Cecil Sharp House, and with partners in the UK and overseas. EFDSS is increasingly developing projects to support the creative development of artists and expanding their opportunities for performance. EFDSS' library and archive, the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library, is the national folk music library and archive - serving as a valuable resource for anybody working in the folk arts.
