Hello
Welcome aboard! ... if you've just received a first mailout from Folk
in the Barn. I just realised there was a large wadge of
applicants who'd signed up via wegottickets over the months and I
hadn't added in. Anyway you're very welcome, thanks for booking
and coming along to support live music, it's one of the very best parts
of life I reckon. But I warn you - these concerts are
addictive. We only book people whose music gives us goosebumps,
or make us gasp in awe. Hopefully then it'll do the same for
you. Seems to be so far!
Something went wrong with the system last week.
After four sell out concerts in the Barn, tickets for Nick Harper were
looking very poor and I sent a mailout saying 'sorry to keep Harping on
but...' but It didn't arrive with anyone so poor Nick had a very
small but select turnout. And for me it was probably the best
concert of the year so far because Nick was just extraordinary!
One of the huge and crazy injustices in the musical world is that
people like Miley Cyrus are well known and Nick Harper isn't
so. Sadly I can't change that everywhere, single-handedly
but I have decided to make it our mission to change that hereabouts if
at all possible. Nick Harper deserves a packed out venue! I know
it was Easter hols still and people had other obligations, so maybe it
was just bad timing. We had just 47, but those 47 were treated to
a simply astonishing show. It's been the only concert in eleven
years of doing this, where people have actually stopped in passing the
next day and knocked on my door to thank me for it. So we'll have
Nick back much sooner than before, and try again, and next time - you
really musn't miss it. And those that came, please come back and
drag along an unsuspecting friend. But you will have to throw
away all pre-conceptions of singing and songs and guitar playing -
because this fella doesn't follow any rules, and that's what makes him
so exciting.
Breabach
Rightyho - next up for your listening and viewing
pleasure - the first visit to Canterbury and Folk in the Barn for
stunning top young Scottish band - Breabach (Braybachk)
Next Saturday 10th May at the Gulbenkian Theatre, University of
Kent, Canterbury.
Tickets are £14 full price and £12 for Students.
I was told they were fab for years by my friend, then I saw them and
agreed. I hope you will too. Here's a little film to give
you some background to their music.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmJWn3wEwMw
And here's a few random quotes from youtube.... what others say...
"Pure magic....?"
"Truly gorgeous. Breabach always make such pleasurable music.?"
"Beautiful beyond measure..."
What you're gonna get is - similar to Lau in that they take the
traditional tunes and add their own seasoning making them extra
delicious. Everything from haunting low whistle and flute,
to rousing, foot stomping, can't sit still in your seat - dualling
bagpipes and soaring fiddle tunes. Great songs and voices
too. Only a week to go - and I can't wait already!
I think the Gulbenkian online booking page is down for
maintenance today, but you can still ring to book on 01227 769075,
or pop up there in person and grab a coffee. Be fabulous to see
you.

Other concerts are selling steadily so thank you for
that. Please keep the bookings coming, so we can keep the music coming.
We have no Show of Hands this year sadly, due to suitable venues either
not being available or just not replying at all. (none of our
usual lovely venues I must add) But we do have Show of Hands - on
a separate and individual basis, so really it's better value -
you get two concerts instead of one. Three if you include Miranda
who came already.

having a tough time and would benefit from a free night out, we have an

Black Robin - Even Cosier - continues!
I met with Ben and Tom - the new team taking over the Black Robin Inn.
Both local lads, with a lot of enthusiasm to get the place back on it's
feet after the dreadful flooding. They've got a lot of work to do
before it can be re-opened. Our chairs have been submerged under
Nailbourne water in the cellar for months and will need a bit of
cleaning up, but being plastic and aluminium - should be
salvageable. If anyone would like to volunteer to help me with
that task - let me know, I'd be grateful for some help. But the
good news is they're happy to have us continue, so I'll get booking for
the Autumn - any requests?
Other Notices
Has anyone lost an earring recently in the Kingston Barn. It's a
greeny yellow crystal stone, in an oval, silver setting. I've got
it if it's yours.
