Smithsonian Folkways Trivia!

Each month we'll ask a trivia question; email your answer, name, and address with the subject "May Trivia" to SmithsonianFolkways_at_si_dot_edu by May 31. A randomly selected entrant with the correct answer will win a free CD of his or her choice!

This Month's Question: What Norwegian stringed instrument is similar to a violin but has additional, sympathetic strings that resonate when the other four are played? (Hint - it is featured in one of the UNESCO Collection albums recently reissued).

Congratulations to last month's winner, James O. Phillips from Urbana, Illinois, who correctly answered the question: "In the 41-year history of The Seldom Scene, current and former band members have often maintained surprising?at least for influential musicians??day jobs.' Can you name two?" We would have accepted any two of the following answers:

  • John Duffey-luthier
  • Ben Eldridge-mathematician
  • John Starling-physician
  • Mike Auldridge-graphic designer
  • Tom Gray-cartographer
  • Dudley Connell-audio archivist
  • Ronnie Simpkins-audio engineer
  • Fred Travers-firefighter
  • Lou Reid-childcare center owner
    (with wife Christy Reid)
  • T. Michael Coleman-videographer and filmmaker
  • Phil Rosenthal-songwriter / children's music label owner
