FRIDAY  13th JUNE   JEFF WARNER

One of America's foremost performers of traditional music.  Songs from the lumber camps, fishing villages and mountain tops of the Eastern seaboard, many from the collection of his parents Anne and Frank Warner.       "Jeff's one of the most welcome of the visitors to these shores from the US, and his gigs are always eagerly awaited  by those in the know. Quite simply, he's one of the most charismatic, enthusiastic and genuinely versatile performers on the whole scene, with a warm and approachable personality to match his encyclopaedic knowledge of traditional song."?David Kidman, Netrhythms (UK)

with Roger Digby (anglo concertina) and Liz Giddings (fiddle)

New CD out  The Passing Moment ."This music is inspired by traditional players, it shines like a lovingly polished old wooden chair which remains fit for purpose through the centuries. No flash, no fancy arrangements, simply lovely musical playing which inspires you to dance or just sit and enjoy." Peta Webb

You missed: FRI  30th MAY- SUN 1st JUNE 2014  10th KEITH SUMMERS GATHERING at which the 3rd & 4th volumes of Keith's 1980s Fermanagh recordings were launched by Paul Marsh (compiler) and Rod Stradling (Musical Traditions Records).

We had a weekend of great music and brilliant moments in an informal pub setting, just as Keith would have wanted it. Keith died in 2004 leaving a bequest with the instructions to "put on a festival that I would have enjoyed". ******************************************************************************************************

About our Guests : We are pleased to welcome for the first time Rita Gallagher, a superb singer from Frosses, South Donegal, renowned for her control and her skill in bringing out the story of the song. She has a cherished collection of Donegal songs, many from the Tunney family. Many times a Fleadh winner, Rita loves joining in song and music sessions.   Grace Toland, a singer of great individual style, specialises in continuing the rich song repertoire of Clonmany, North Donegal, which she first heard as a child from singers in her father's pub. She and Brian Doyle both work at the Irish Traditional Music Archive and are co-organisers of the Inishowen Traditional Singing Weekend. Brian is an accomplished banjo player and occasional writer of satirical songs. Patricia Flynn, from Mullaghbawn, South Armagh, has a beautiful voice which adorns her songs. It was her meeting in 1981 with Mick Quinn, her now near neighbour and friend, which made her take the singing tradition to heart. Patricia and husband Jim were among the originators of the Slieve Gullion Singers' Festival. Sean Mone from Co. Armagh is a brilliant satirical songwriter and quietly witty commentator on the affairs of Northern Ireland. Alison McMorland and Geordie McIntyre are renowned for their superb singing and their enthusiasm. A powerful ballad singer Alison has lovingly documented the lives of Willie Scott and Elizabeth Stewart, while Geordie has written some intense and influential political songs. From North East Scotland, Joe Aitken (recently Scots Trad. Music Award Singer of the Year) excels in bothy ballads which he puts across with great gusto, while Geordie Murison has a choice collection of local songs, many in Doric dialect, which he sings with great finesse. From Liverpool, Bruce Scott is a powerful singer of traditional songs and renowned for his own hard-hitting compositions, several of which have won the New Ballad competitions at All-Ireland Fleadhs. From South Tyneside, Jim Bainbridge is a skilful musician and a natural entertainer who can make any session go with a swing and has some hilarious and unexpected songs.

We are lucky to know so many excellent musicians who regularly play as RESIDENT BANDS at the Musical Traditions Club :    The Rakes (Reg Hall, Paul Gross, Ken Lees, Michael Plunkett ); The Pigeons (Sarah Crofts , Paul Gross , Paul Quarry); Will Duke, Matt Quinn ; John & Katie Howson's new Valiant Dance Band with Rob Neal, Roger Digby & Liz Giddings. ********************************************************* **********************************************

KEITH SUMMERS is fondly remembered by many of us here as a good old boy who loved the excitement of a traditional singing and music session. Although he never regarded himself as a folk song collector, since his untimely death in 2004 the importance of his work has increasingly been recognised.  Keith's extensive recordings from 1971-1990 (transferred to 60 CDs) are housed in The British Library Sound Archive and are now available digitally. http://sounds.bl.uk/World-and-traditional-music/Keith-Summers-Collection   See Andrew King's article in Folk Music Journal (FMJ) Vol. 9 (3), 2008.  There is also a set in the EFDSS Sound Library at Cecil Sharp House, now fully indexed by Martin Nail for easy access and also integrated in the Roud Index.

Many of Keith's recordings are available on CD: A Story to Tell: Keith Summers in Suffolk 1972-7. Double CD plus booklet, on Rod Stradling's Musical Traditions label, MT CD 339-0, 2007. Hardy Sons of Dan: Football, Hunting and Other Traditional Songs from around Loch Erne's Shore.. Double CD plus booklet. Musical Traditions MTCD 329-0, 2004 www.mustrad.org.uk (these songs are not available at BLSA or EFDSS)
Good Hearted Fellows: Traditional Folk Songs, Music Hall Songs and Tunes from Suffolk, 1971- 77 on John Howson's Veteran label,VT154CD,2006 www.veteran.co.uk
For Keith's life and achievements, see the obituaries handout plus this appreciation by Paul Marsh http://www.mustrad.org.uk/ks_obit.htm     and further tributes at http://www.mustrad.org.uk/obits/keith.htm
