Pre Festival Barn Dance with Florida
Tenterden
Folk Festival is supporting a pre- festival
barn dance with a nationally known but locally based, top ceilidh
band, Florida.
The dance is part of the
Revelation arts programme and takes place at St Mary's Church
in Ashford
town centre on Saturday 20th September. Doors open at 7.00
p.m. and dancing starts at 7.45 and continues to 10.30. Tickets are
available in advance from www.revelationstmarys.co.uk, Right
Track Music and Ashford Tourist Information Office and cost ?9.00
in advance or ?11.00 on the door for adults. As this is a
special family event tickets for under 16s are only ?1 in advance
or ?3.00 on the door. Under 16s must be accompanied by an
adult. This is a good opportunity to put on your
barn-dancing shoes on, bring your family and all your friends for a
foot stomping night. You do not have to know how to do the
dances as the bands caller will walk you through them and call the
steps as you go along and there will also be a core of people who
do know what they are doing who you can follow.
Florida adopts a confident bold and brassy persona with trumpet,
flugelhorn and sax adding to their already deeply impressive sound.
Innovative and intriguing; the sound of a contemporary
English ceilidh music and not to be confused with the Americanised
social dance so you will NOT find lots of people with checked
shirts and cowboy boots!
The band consists of Gavin Atkin (guitar, fiddle, vocals), Richard
Goodwin (saxophones, taragot, etc),
Charlie Handley (trumpets, synth trumpet, vocals), Chris Warner
(bass, vocals) and Tim Bull (melodeons).
Gavin lives in Cranbrook and with his wife Julie and is very
involved in the local folk scene, not only as a musicians, but also
as organisers of monthly folk sessions at the Bell & Jorrocks
in Frittenden and tune sessions and song workshops
at the Gun and Spitroast in Horsmonden.
Gavin and Julie will also be bringing their tunes workshop to
Tenterden Folk Festival again this year and will also be leading
one of the weekend's many music and song sessions. Not only that
but Gavin will also be one of the voices to be heard at the popular
"Cinque Ports sea songs and shanties" session on the Saturday
afternoon.

The James
Findlay Trio have just been added to the guest
list for Tenterden Folk Festival 2014.
James comes from a family of folk singers and his enthusiasm lies
firmly within the English tradition. He is particularly
passionate about songs from his home counties of Dorset, Somerset
and Devon. He couples this with an extensive repertoire and
love for song that shows through his knowledge and understanding of
the material.
