Tenterden
Folk Festival 2014
Thursday
2nd to Sunday 5th October
It has been a busy July for festivals in Ashford with Tentertainment
at the beginning of the month and Create near the end and now it is
only two months to go until Tenterden Folk Festival 2014 in October.
There is also Broadstairs Folk Week to go to in August or even
Sidmouth and Whitby, but we are working on the programme and hoping
to get it out on the streets at the end of August or the first week
in September at the latest; but sometimes the best laid plans
........ so lets wait and see.
As an accountant I cannot help but look at the finances and it makes
me happy to say that grant income is going to be up on last year
thanks mainly to a grant from the KCC Arts Investment Fund and increases
in several other small grants. Ticket sales and stall booking
fees are already ahead of this time last year. We have also
seen an increase in sponsorship from Shepherd Neame and Hobgoblin
Music and added several new commercial supporters including local
businesses Old Dairy Brewery and Philberts, Some of this income
has gone to add a couple of extra guests to the bill while still
enabling us to retain some to cover increases in costs and logistical
requirements.
Most of you will have seen James
Findlay at festivals but you may not have yet seen The
James Findlay Trio so we are lucky to have got them before their big
push in 2015. We are also pleased to have been able to add Jon
Sanders who often tours in New Zealand and Ireland
but is not often seen in England. It helped that his parents
just happen to live near Tenterden and he was coming home to visit
them. He leaves for Budapest the next day to go into the
recording studios so it will be the only chance to catch "The
bard of the bouzouki, the duke of the uke". Tickets for
the Thursday evening pre-festival fundraising concert with Ashley
Hutchings and Kent Nicol are going well so make sure you get yours soon.
Then there are guests as well know as North East singer
songwriter Jez Lowe.
The number of Morris sides coming to the festival increases nearly
every day with Doodle Oak Clog Morris and Hands Around Ladies Morris
being recent additions bring the number of teams confirmed to around
40 with others still to confirm. Add a couple of giants and a
horse and you have a real show in the streets. If your side or
team are coming have you remembered to tell us? If not do so NOW.
Just email dance_at_tenterdenfolkfestival_dot_org_dot_uk.
I said we were working on the programme so here is a brief extract.
"Barrack
Room Ballads and other songs of military life: This
is a themed concert to commemorate the 1st World
War. Rudyard Kipling (1865 - 1936) lived for many years at
Batemans, in nearby Burwash, and wrote a collection of poems on the
subject of soldiers' lives. Many of the poems have been set to
music and have become part of the folk song tradition."
This concert will of course feature Dave Webber and Anni
Fentiman plus Tom Lewis and will be introduced by Pete Castle whose
wife Sue has a family link to Kipling. More about that in due
course.
