Subject: Sally Barker - as recommended by Sir Tom Jones
Hi Everyone
Hope you've had a good week. A warm welcome to our most recent signees - some
of whom we met for the first time at the wonderful Albert Lee concert just a
week ago. Wasn't he incredible!! ....and such a lovely man, so gracious. I
saw him changing his guitar strings before the show and asked what he intended
to do with them. He told me they were going in the bin, so I asked if I could
have them instead, and bless him he said 'yes of course but why not let me
give you a new set instead'.... Of course it was his old used strings that
held the magic for me.... now I just need an electric guitar to put them on ha
ha! and a set of Albert Lee fingers too..... oh well.
So onwards... and right now we're getting all ready to host the wondrous
singer Sally Barker at the Gulbenkian tomorrow night.
If you haven't heard me going on and on and on (ha ha) about Sally already -
here's a quick re-cap. Sally has sung on the folk scene for many years,
supporting people like Robert Plant and Bob Dylan back 'in the day'. She
went on to form excellent female harmony group The Poozies and duetted with
Steve Knightley at the Royal Albert Hall in 1996

A single mum after losing her husband to cancer in 2003, this year her sons
persuaded her to enter for BBC's The Voice competition. She was picked at the
blind auditions by Sir Tom Jones who simply dissolved into tears every time he
heard her sing, as did many of the other contestants. He said 'your voice was
so beautiful I just couldn't help myself'.... and it is..... she is a
beautiful interpreter of songs, both her own and other peoples. Sally went
on to reach the final, gaining thousands of new fans around the country, and I
couldn't wait to invite her along to play for us. I last saw her a few weeks
ago at Cropredy where Fairport invited her to sing Sandy Denny's who knows
where the time goes.... a very special moment.
There are still some excellent seats available for tomorrow night if you'd
like to come and see Sally. She will be joined by special guest Vicki
Genfan, who is an outstanding guitar player in her own right - and her band.
No Tom Jones sadly, but maybe one day eh!
