Festival Fortnight is almost upon us, and with over 200 events happening during the Festival, there is something for everyone. There are also a range of events taking place across the region in the run up to the Festival that will whet your appetite for our favourite two weeks of the year.

 

 

 

 

Canterbury Festival's 2014 Poet of the Year Announced

 

 

 

 

 

 

Each year, Canterbury Festival runs a competition to crown a new Poet of the Year. The anthology of poems submitted has been published, the judges have deliberated and on National Poetry Day, 2 October, there was a series of readings and the announcement of this year's Poet at St Gregory's Centre for Music. Supported by Truprint Media, Waterstones & The Wine Room, the evening saw Irish poet John Bayliss Post crowned 2014's worthy winner.

Spotlight on: Chaos Cabaret

 

 

 

 

 

 

This year there are some exciting events that may have passed you by in the brochure; Wednesday 22 October sees Festival Science Co-ordinator Frank Burnet take over the Spiegeltent for his Chaos Cabaret. This will be an evening unlike any other you've experienced. With live music, performers and scientists , this event will take you on a whirlwind journey based on the theoretical question ?Could the flapping of a butterfly's wings in Brazil cause a tornado in Texas?'.

Psychological one-woman thriller

This one-woman tour de force is appearing at the Festival on 23 October, at St Mary's Hall Studio Theatre. Inside is a show inspired by astonishing true stories and explores the effects of Stockholm Syndrome. The show has received rave reviews, including 5 stars from Broadway Baby: a piece of theatre that instantly knocks you off your feet by its sheer astonishing bravado and unforgettable strength."

Jeremy Deller: English Magic

Turner Contemporary's latest exhibition, opening its doors on 11 October, weaves a mythical narrative through moments and events from Britain's shared cultural memory. Entitled Jeremy Deller: English Magic, the exhibition is a whistlestop tour between the past and present -from Neolithic hand axes, through William Morris, the socialist movement right through to 21st century capitalism and the invasion of Iraq.
