Asaf Sirkis is a hugely respected player on the UK's scene - a
brilliantly versatile drummer and percussionist whose multi- layered
influences lend a special air to his music. A leader in his own
right, Sirkis' playing has been a crucial component to the work of
players like Gilad Atzmon, Nicolas Meier and Tim Garland.
This latest project is a collaboration with Polish vocalist Sylwia
Bialas, and despite taking its inspiration from a similarly broad
range of sources as his previous groups, the music they produce has
its own identity. Bialas sings in Polish and adds her own distinctive
touch to the proceedings, as contemporary jazz sounds are deftly
mixed with melodic and rhythmic ideas from the Middle East and India
as well as from European classical and folk traditions. The group is
touring to support the release of their debut recording in November
2014.
"Sirkis's compositions, like his
creative, elegant drumming, are inviting and challenging. The contrasting
textures and moods slide in and out of one another seamlessly." -
Ian Patterson,
All About Jazz
"Asaf
Sirkis sounding creatively freer and more dramatically inventive than
ever on drums" - John Fordham, The Guardian
"Bialas's
voice is not only exceptional, both in timbre and range, but her
improvisations are stunning. She uses her voice like an instrument,
wordless, powerful, soaring?" - Free Jazz Album Reviews
