Subject: Smugglers Newsletter

Folks of the far, the wide, the near and the narrow; Hello

We hope to find you in palatable health and happiness.

Sometimes one can leave doing a Smugglers Newsletter far too long. News naturally builds up, and before you know you have to recount 6 months worth of activity. Other times, stuff just racks up like no-one's business. This time is absolutely the latter.

Awfully cliched to wonder where to start, but it's dilemma nonetheless. I suppose we should start with the elephant in the room?

It's right there at that address. See for yourself.

In classic tenacious Smugglers style, this went from idea to actual-keys-to-the-shop in the space of a few months. It opened, somewhat appropriately, on 1st of April (ever heard of the wisdom of being a fool?). It's the new Smugglers HQ of sorts. Frankly - it's great.

Check it out here:

...or better, come say hello in person (open everyday except Tuesdays). We need your support, so there's a membership programme. There will be in-store sessions (Emily Barker 17th April, Cocos Lovers/Syd Arthur/Will Varley/The Magic Lantern 18th April), tea and coffee (free for members), and music. Wonderful music. It's worth a wee look.

NB - keep an eye out the the Smugglers Records Shop in Mojo magazine next month?

Saturday 6th June, Smugglers Festival Land

Remember the Pop-Up festival we did last year? It was great wasn't it. We had a nice time.

This will be totally, utterly incredible.

Desert Blues stars and political exiles Tinariwen have become legendary. Their snaking melodies and wild, entrancing rhythms have demanded the worlds attention and made them one of the foremost ?world music' artists in the world. They almost exclusively play to audiences of 5000 and above. This will be an intimate 1000.

With a full day of support from the likes of Cocos Lovers, Hot Feet and Poggy Hatton, this promises to be one of the most special events the South-East has ever seen.

Right - *cue exasperated sigh of relief* - that's some of the bigger stuff. Exciting.

There's more though.

1st - 3rd May, Tortosa, Catalonia

Smugglers Spanish sister festival happens for the first time this year in the Catalonian mountains. A beautiful gathering of people and music in a beautiful, idyllic place. The more the merrier though obviously?

Saturday 9th May, St Marys Art Centre, Sandwich

The Alash Ensemble have had widespread critical acclaim for their tasteful adoption of modern performance styles whilst never compromising their traditional Tuvan spirit. They regularly tour the US and Europe and have collaborated with artists such as Sun Ra's Arkestra and Bela Fleck. Wonderful, and probably weird, but not something to miss.

Saturday 23rd May, The Astor Theatre, Deal

Deal's own defining sound, this will be one of only a few hometown shows for Cocos this year. There will be a premier of video for new single ?Listening Ear' and a special guest support act. New material and old favourites, Cocos Lovers never miss the mark.

Friday 29th May, The Gulbenkian Theatre, Canterbury

Will Varley has gone from strength to strength over the past year. All the jokes about him taking over the world have become an alarming reality.

If you've seen or heard him before, then i needn't convince you. You will literally laugh and cry. He is the quintessential troubadour.

Well I think that will do for now Smugglers. If things keep going the way they're going though we might have to make these newsletters more regular. I do hope you're all well. As for me, i've finally gotten sick of the land-lubbing-life and relocated myself to a sleepy river vessel.

With all this going on though, I might have to postpone the quiet life.

Until next time true-believers,

Arthur Smuggler
