2pm- 3.30

Chris Haigh: Introduction to Folk Fiddle (until 3.40pm)
Level: ?comfortable in first position? to advanced.

This workshop will demonstrate some of the differences between classical and folk fiddle, looking at tune structures, bowing and ornamentation. The tunes will be mostly Irish, but with some reference to English, Scottish, American and East European folk music. We will work from printed music.

 Break for cakes and tea

 4pm-5.30

Chris Haigh: American Old Time and Bluegrass (until 5.40pm)
Level: ?comfortable in first position? to advanced

The fiddle music of the Appalachians is based on tunes brought from the British Isles in the 17th and 18thC, but has developed a life of its own, with a distinctive language of drones, blue notes and shuffle bowing patterns. We will look at some of the simpler old time tunes, and show how they evolved with the creation of ?bluegrass? in the 20th Century, incorporating hot improvisation and complex double stops. We will work from printed music.
