Equator Choir Competition 2015

Once again amateur, school, and community choirs based in Kent and Medway are invited to take part in the Equator Choir Competition 2015.

 

This event is part of the Equator Festival Music Series 2015, and is done in partnership with Kent-based organisations.

 

 

The series is organised by ShivaNova a cutting edge world music company with an international reputation.

 

Past choirs have been outstanding and have included:

  • Tonbridge Grammar School for Girls ( winners 2013)
  • Simon Langton Grammar school for Boys (winners)
  • Paddock Wood Primary School ( winners 2013)
  • Bridge and Patrixbourne Primary School (twice winners)
  • HIghworth Grammar School for Girls (winners)
  • Great Chart Primary School (winners)
  • Swalecliffe School (winners)
  • Tunstall Primary School (winners)
  • East Kent Girls Choir
  • Pent Valley Technology College
  • Hythe Bay Primary school
  • St Saviours CoE Junior School
  • Ashford Community Choir, and Front Room Community Choir

Entry criteria

 

Amateur choirs of all ages are invited to apply including youth, school and adult choirs.

 

The choir must have a minimum of twelve singers and be available to perform at the finalist's concert on Friday 10th July 2015 at Norton Knatchbull Grammar School, Hythe Road, Ashford TN24 0QJ, Kent at 7.30pm.

 

Applicants need to submit an application form with a list of 3 songs, one of which must be from another country or culture. Duration of performance for each choir will be not longer than 15 minutes. Please send us an email asap if you wish to take part.

 

 

How the competition will be judged

 

There will be a judging panel that will include highly experienced musicians from round the country, and include Paul Patterson - composer of many choral works, choral tutors from Kent  and Equator/ShivaNova.

 

Performing choirs will also be involved in the final adjudication.

 

Choirs will be judged on the following: presentation, quality, and choice of material.

 

Choirs of all ages are encouraged to apply. Community Choirs and Adults Choirs are also encouraged to apply.

 

Deadlines

 

The deadline for receipt of applications is June 10th 2015.

 

Please include the application letter with the following details:

name of choir or school, address and contact name, telephone and mobile number, email address, size and age-range of choir and list of the 3 songs.

What to expect next

 

 Applicants will be sent a final schedule soon after the deadline date and provided with further information about the event.

 

Exclusions

 

Choirs managed or run by professional music organisations. Choirs with less than 12 singers. Choirs from outside Kent and Medway.

 The Equator Festival is a world music and dance festival produced by ShivaNova.

ShivaNova is a cutting-edge arts organisation with an international reputation, specialising in music. Shiva Nova is an ensemble of musicians from around the world, who blend urban and folk, jazz and ambient sounds with influences from Indian, African, Caribbean and Western music. EQUATOR FESTIVAL was set up by ShivaNova in 2007 as a promotional arm of the company. ShivaNova has worked with girls and young woman from a range of communities and in 2006 set up the Girls Only Global Orchestra (GoGo) when the idea of the Equator -Women of the World Festival (WOW) was also born.

 

ShivaNova/Equator has been awarded Strategic Touring Funds from Arts Council Lottery Funding and works with many partners and arts organisations to promote culturally diverse work and seeks to extend its touring and promotional activities in Kent and London including Ashford, Chatham, Folkestone, Margate, Rye, Sevenoaks, and Whitstable.
