Subject: Great to be back! - with Brass Section AND Lead Guitar!
Hi Everyone
Hello from sunny Keswick. Where are you all? I usually bump into at least a
half dozen Folkinthebarners when out on the fells! Three different groups in
one day once - it was very strange - but in a nice way! We're hoping to be
back in time for our first FitB concert of the season next Sunday, just
kidding - OF COURSE we'll be back, how could we miss the amazing Home Service
- especially as it's very likely the last time they'll perform together with
this line-up - if at all (sad face).
If you're still undecided - I should point out that the remaining tickets are
selling fast (daily) and could run out if you're not quick. We saw them play
two weekends ago at the New Forest Folk Festival and were reminded of the
sheer power and majesty of the whole band, when they're in full force -
there's no sound like it and there probably never will be again. I promise
you this will be a night to remember - many people are travelling long
distances to be there - and not just us!
Home Service - last performance led by John Tams Sunday 13th September
Gulbenkian Theatre Doors 7pm for 7.30pm start Tickets £18 full price
£12 students

Following on from that - on the 20th September we are being spoiled further by
a first solo visit to the Kingston Barn from the fabulous John Doyle. Many of
you will have already seen John playing at the Gulbenkian with John McCusker
and Mike McGoldrick and know how brilliant he is and what a beautiful voice he
has. John is a founding member of Irish super band Solas, toured for years
with Joan Baez, and is part of the Transatlantic Sessions,..... and if those
aren't credentials enough he has played at the White House for President Obama
with his then musical partner Liz Carroll. Wow, eh! How lucky are we to have
him coming to the Barn! Tickets have been worryingly (and unbelievably) slow
to start selling for this, but just today I've had three orders come in so I'm
hoping that it's going to continue that way. John gave me a copy of his solo
album when he first came to play for us back in Feb 2014 and it's one I keep
returning to. His music was a real revelation for me, I had no idea who he was
or how good he is. Did I also mention that the fabulous Toby Shaer is opening
for John and will no doubt be joining him for a complicated tune or two? Well
he is - and that's guaranteed to raise the hairs on the back of your neck - if
not knees!
John will also be leading a guitar workshop in the afternoon and nearly half
the tickets for this have been sold. This is good news but it also means
there are still half to go, so any guitar players out there - please check out
John's playing style online and then come and learn how he does it. If you've
ever tried or wanted to play Irish/celtic tunes, alone or in sessions - either
leading or accompanying - then there will be something for you. This is a
very rare and special opportunity to learn from an absolute master of his art
- I urge you not to miss it.

I hope you all had a lovely Summer and are now rested and ready for the new
seasons ahead. We're off down to Grange for a gentle stroll along the
beautiful river - knees still recovering from yesterdays exertions!
Other ticket news....
...is that everything seems to be selling very well, huge thanks to you. I'm
very happy about this and will toast you all tonight with a half of 'Summit
Else' in the Dog and Gun! Wish you were here etc etc....
See you Sunday
cheers
Debs
