WESSEX ACOUSTIC
What a great evening's music and entertainment
we had last night with Winter Wilson, supported by our own Andy Stone.
A small but select audience went home with big
smiles on their faces.
Coming soon on 20th November we have something very
different in the form of Mike
O'Connor and Barbara Griggs.
Mike and Barbara are
great exponents of a delightful variety of traditional and trad. style songs
and music. Many of the songs having a theme of stories of Mike's beloved
Cornwall.
Mike is a prolific songwriter and has been
involved in the TV Series Poldark.
The composer of the lovely theme music for Poldark is the brilliant Anne
Dudley. Mike O'Connor advised Mammoth Screen on dances, tunes and folksongs for
both Series 1 and Series 2. Mike wrote the tunes for "I 'd' Pluck a Red
Rose" (Series 1, Episodes 4 and 8) and "As Pretty a Piece of
Mischief" (Series 1, Episode 4) and both tune & lyrics for
"Medhel an Gwyns" (Series 1, Episode 8). Mike has also written some
stunning songs for Series 2, but at the moment they are still a secret. Also at
various times you will see Mike on screen in a cameo role as a fiddler - what
else!
Dave Webber: "I knew instantly that this tune was from the O'Connor
stable, it has Mike's "Fingerprints of Genius" all over it. Great
sensitivity to the tradition. Brilliant! Thank you BBC for going to the trouble
to get it right!"
Mike's vivid songs have been recorded & sung
by artists such as Martyn Wyndham-Read, Johnny Collins, Kathy Wallis, Mike Nicholson,
Sarah Morgan & many more. Mike produced & directed the iconic folk
operas 'The Cry of Tin', 'Unsung Heroes' & 'Cornish Lads'.
Supporting Mike and Barbara we have the highly popular young local
band Kadia.
Everywhere they go, Kadia are collecting new fans and followers.
They are the face of modern folk, taking a new
look at some traditional songs, some of their own material, and some trad. folk
versions of modern pop songs, very much their own arrangements that will make
you look at pop songs in a very different way. Come and listen to Chris Bailey
(Guitar/Vocal), Lee Cuff (Cello/Vocal), David Hoyland
(Percussion/Mandolin/Vocal)
This is going to be a great night for lovers of
good traditional style and contemporary music and songs.
Tickets are £10 if booked ahead, £12
unbooked. NUS members, RBL members, and serving armed forces pay only £5.

from the great local singer-songwriter Nigel
Waite.
