TWO DATES IN FEBRUARY 2016

FRIDAY 12th FEBRUARY THE RAKES' 60th ANNIVERSARY  The RAKES (Reg Hall, Michael Plunkett & Paul Gross, with Ken Lees) celebrate 60 years of playing together.

With Irish music from the Linane Family  : Michael and Sinead Linane (fiddle), Maureen Linane (accordeon), with John MacLeod (flute) and Reg Hall (piano) plus many more special guests.

"I first heard The Rakes (Reg Hall (melodeon, piano ), Paul Gross (fiddle) and Michael Plunkett (fiddle, flute) 1967 at the legendary club at The Fox, Islington Green, where Bob Davenport and The Rakes were residents. I was exhilarated by their lively Irish Music which made you want to get up and dance, and by the sociable atmosphere they created in the club. The Rakes had been playing music for English social dances in South London since 1956 and discovered Irish traditional music in London pubs. Reg: "We'd go into a pub and be the only English people there all night. We followed the music round : CamdenTown, Kilburn, Wandsworth"..They started playing with great musicians like Willie Clancy, Michael Gorman, Martin Byrnes and absorbing  the core repertoire of The Rakes.

They recorded three LPs for Topic with Bob Davenport in the 1970s and a CD on Fellside in 1997. A sought after vinyl release was The Rakes (Leader,1975) with legendary Irish fiddle player Lucy Farr plus Ron Somers on drums.    Ken Lees (banjo) describes himself as the "new boy" : he joined The Rakes Big Band (with Susan Lees on piano) in the early 80s after playing in many dance bands and being a mainstay of the Islington folk club over the years. " (Peta Webb)
