The Big Session 2016

Hi all

A general sense of up-gearing and loin-girding here at Oyster Central this month.  Lots happening...

Our double-CD, 29-track Best-of is nearing the finishing line.  THIS HOUSE WILL STAND:  the best of Oysterband 1998-2015  is released

on Friday May 27 on Navigator Records on CD and Download.

If you prefer to put the money directly into the band's pocket (hint), you can buy the CD from our online shop here.  Orders will be shipped on or immediately after May 27.

The first disc, "This House Will Stand", consists of 15 tracks chosen by the band from their last 6 studio albums.

The second, "The Work Of My Own Two Hands", includes a mix of all kinds of other things:  unreleased songs, demos, rare B-sides, live cuts, alt versions.

"...while longevity can be a damning recipe for boredom and taking an artist's product for granted, the Oysters have consistently striven to look forward, not back, responding to the texture of the times at every turn, and many who chance upon this lovingly packaged .... collection may be surprised by the depth and range of the content."   -   Colin Irwin, fROOTS Magazine

though there is a little more to announce shortly.

Our tour in Canada in July will be different in one important way.

Dil Davies has occupied the drum stool in style for almost a decade, but between two young children and his ever-expanding Porter & Davies tactile monitor business it's hard now for him to commit to extended tours. Dil will continue to appear with Oysterband at UK summer and autumn festivals, but meanwhile we're delighted to welcome Pete Flood (of the recently retired Bellowhead) on drums for Canada and for some shows at the end of the year.

Will Pete make any difference to the Oyster sound? We've no idea, frankly, and it's going to be really interesting finding out.

Finally, our warmest thanks to everyone who came to the 2016 Big Session in Buxton.  The gamble in going to a 3-day festival seems fully justified, and the atmosphere was pretty universally agreed to be excellent.  There were some storming performances by some of our favourite folk-related acts.  Good, too, to see the trickle of visitors from other countries increasing, as at Big Sessions in the past - we hope that trend will continue.

Some tweaks may need making to beer-festival access and a couple of other things, but all in all we're satisfied with the progress of the event.  Our thanks too to the staff and volunteers at Buxton Opera House - you were fantastic.

The date for your diary:
