Good afternoon to you all. We bring weekly event news from the
revolving doors of The Lighthouse!
Firstly, I wanted to bring your attention to a very special
ticketed event that is on the horizon. A fantastic fusion of
ancient and futuristic sounds, the band also happen to feature
Robert Plant's drummer Dave Smith!
FOFOULAH
Thursday
26th May
Tickets ?10 in advance - available behind the bar, via Smugglers
Records Shop and online HERE.
(tickets ?12 on the door - subject to availability)
"Really
intelligent, infectious and effective ? It's subtle, beckoning with
its toes in the ancestral mud, but this is modern music,
intriguing, well-textured and very likeable." - fRoots
"A bravely
adventurous new fusion band." ****
- The
Guardian
"It's a
steaming concoction featuring swinging guitar and sax riffs driven
by Robert Plant's drummer Dave Smith, who also produces. Fofoulah
don't sound like an African band, they sound like guys versed in
contemporary rock and electronic mash-up with a taste for West
African sabar and talking drums." - Evening Standard
Fofoulah (meaning
"it's there" in Wolof) was formed in London in 2011 and
features Senegalese vocalist, dancer and percussionist Batch Gueye,
Tom Challenger (Red Snapper) on saxophone and keyboards, Phil
Stevenson (Iness Mezel) on guitar, Johnny Brierley (Outhouse
Ruhabi) on bass, drummer Dave Smith (Robert Plant, Juju, Ruhabi)
and Kaw Secka (Ruhabi, Irok) on Sabar drums. With the rhythms of
the Sabar drums - a traditional form of Wolof drumming from Gambia
and Senegal - at its heart, Fofoulah's music has evolved into an
inspired cosmopolitan m?lange that also incorporates elements of
electronic music, dub, improvisation and afro-rock. Like the
complex city they live in, Fofoulah's music is shaped and lifted by
diverse sound-worlds and cultures.

Garance
Louis is a songwriter and accordionist from rural Southern
France. Her band "The Mitochondrie" are a rag tag ensemble of
gifted rougues she acquired from the street corners of London.
Together they make a very beautiful, quirky and rickety musical
family coming from an old cabaret. They mix colourful dynamics
and unexpected changes with traditional folkloric styles.
You could call it a kind of "dirty
tango, rock n roll, post-musette, tramp jazz, progressive
gypsy?" Or give up on generic descriptions and just
experience the band and their music live on stage.
