Introducing the WeGotTickets INDIE50
After
15 years in live music, we've seen first-hand the effect one person
can have on a local scene. With the inaugural INDIE50 we shine a
light on fifty unsung heroes of grass-roots music, working
tirelessly to make the beautiful madness that is the UK's independent
scene.
This vital, diverse group of pros and passionate
behind-the-scene-ers were selected by our panel
of judges (including 6 Music Presenter Tom Ravenscroft
and Pitchfork writer Laura Snapes) from public nominations, and
then shot and interviewed by photographer Dan Wilton and journalist Josh Jones. They travelled from
Totnes to Glasgow and everywhere in between on their journey to
capture the INDIE50, and we're pumped to be able to share and
celebrate some of them here. Read more about the fifty and what
indie means to each of them over at the new-look www.indie50.com.

"DIY
is a counter culture and it means different things to different
people. To me it means gaining skills for yourself and then using
those skills to lift up people who might not have the
opportunities, and not having to rely on record label people and big
boy promoters. You have complete control over everything that you
want to do." - Camille Rearden

"Independent
to me is Skepta, JME, Stormzy, Giggs - that's what I see as
independent?I don't even imagine white dudes with guitars.
Independent for me is seeing Skepta sell out Brixton Academy and
that being so sick that you can do that by yourself." - Caroline

"Staying
independent, certainly as a promoter, is so hard. You can make
money but you can lose it in a flash - and I do, constantly. I like
hustling, I like the risk, I like the danger. I really care about
what I do and I've met some amazing people...If people like you
then you'll go a long way. If you're a dickhead then no one will
want to work with you." - Sarah Cole

"Independent
agents are more likely to take a chance on things that other people
might not want to go out on a limb for. That needs to keep
happening otherwise it will be a safe and sanitised place to be and
that's not what makes our UK live music scene." - Dan
Monsell
