Maybe
it was the consistently good weather (no thunderstorms this year while we
were on stage, unlike the apocalyptic one at Salmon Arm Festival in 2015 when
the crowd in front of us simply disappeared for 40 minutes in a greeny-black
waterfall), or maybe it was because we hadn't played Winnipeg, Vancouver or
Calgary Folk Festivals for a very long time indeed; but July's trip to
Canada was unusually enjoyable and relaxed. We actually had time to
hang out with chums here and there, a rare pleasure. One
highlight was being invited to share a workshop at Vancouver on the theme of
social justice, sponsored by local trade unions. Our co-performers were
Bruce Cockburn, Martin & Eliza Carthy and formidable Venezuelan ensemble
Betsayda Machado y La Parranda El Clavo (Google them if the name's not
familiar). Amazing how monster afro-venezuelan percussion grooves can
vibe up almost
any
kind of song....and in the spirit of Emma Goldman's alleged remark about "If
I can't dance I don't want to be in your revolution" we ended with Bruce,
Eliza and JJ shaking it on stage to a wall of thunderous joyful percussion.
Oh for a movie camera... Somewhere
in there was Pete Flood too, his first (and very together) live performances
with Oysterband. He'll be back with us for the November and December
shows listed above. (We may need to have a word about shirts first,
though.) Alan
