"Crucial to folk music having
become what it is today," says writer Scott Alarik in the introduction to Classic English and Scottish Ballads
from Smithsonian Folkways (from the Francis James Child Collection), referring
to the immensely influential Child Ballads. Child, a 19th-century Harvard
professor and scholar collected timeless English and Scottish traditional
ballads which to this day are widely adored, studied, and actively performed.
This new addition to our Classic Series (#27 to be exact) introduces
listeners to these songs, pulling from the label's rich collection and
featuring artists like Lead Belly, Pete Seeger, The New Lost City Ramblers,
Jean Ritchie, and more throughout the 21-track album.

Child Ballad, after many months of blood, sweat, and tears, Folkways is
delighted to announce the launch of our redesigned website. As you enjoy
the bright new look-and-feel of the website, which includes easier
navigation, bigger graphics, and better functionality all around, please
consider dropping us a line to let us know what you think and if you have
any questions, comments, or concern by sending an email to smithsonianfolkways_at_si_dot_edu.
