Lankum (formerly Lynched)
In concert at Kings Place
8pm, Hall One
http://www.kingsplace.co.uk/whats-on/music/lankum-lynched
Lankum (Lynched) are a four-piece traditional folk group from Dublin, Ireland,
who combine distinctive four-part vocal harmonies with arrangements of uilleann pipes, concertina,
Russian accordion, fiddle and guitar. Their repertoire spans humorous Dublin music-hall ditties and
street-songs, classic ballads from the Traveller tradition, traditional Irish and American dance tunes,
and their own original material.
Cold Old Fire was recorded in August 2013, and although fundamentally an album of traditional Irish
song, heavily influenced by Irish legends such as Frank Harte, Planxty and The Dubliners, subtle
traces of the group's collective influences can be detected, from American old-timey music, ambient
techno and psychedelic folk, to black metal, punk and rock 'n' roll.
Since then, the group have completed a six week coast-to-coast tour of the United States, as well as
performing in the last two years alongside some notable artists, including Blackbird Raum, Harry
Bradley, Daoiri Farrell, Fred Fortune, Mike Gangloff, Paddy & Séamus Glackin, Barry Gleeson,
Landless, Lau, Leyla McCalla, Jem Mitchell, Liam O'Connor & Seán McKeon, Morgan O'Kane, Lisa
O'Neill, Tim Scanlon and Skipper's Alley.
The band played a blinding set at last year's Celtic Connections festival, where they were snapped up
for both Cambridge Folk Festival and Sidmouth FolkWeek 2015.
A live TV appearance on Later With Jools Holland and a sold out UK tour followed.
In 2016 Lankum will continue to play some high profile dates in UK and Europe before heading into
the studio to record the follow up to Cold Old Fire.

Altan - 30th Anniversary Tour
Support by The Trad Gathering
In concert at Kings Place
8pm, Hall One
http://www.kingsplace.co.uk/whats-on/music/altan-30th-anniversary-tour
Altan have been long established as the best and foremost traditional Irish band to come out of Ireland.
With their exquisitely produced award-winning recordings - their ground breaking
Island Angel recording going to No. 2 in the Billboard World Music Charts in 1993 -
ranging dynamically from the most sensitive and touching ancient ballads all the way to the energetic
foot-tapping reels and jigs, and their heart-warming engaging live performances, Altan have moved
audiences from Donegal all the way to Tokyo, to Sydney, Seattle and beyond.
Altan's music is steeped in the rich and colourful heritage of County Donegal in the North West of
Ireland. Altan have been touring consistently since their genesis in the early eighties, when
Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh and her late husband, Belfast flute player Frankie Kennedy,
decided to leave their teaching jobs and pursue a career in music and tour the world with their
friends. With members Mark Kelly (guitar), Ciaran Curran (bouzouki), Daithí Sproule (guitar),
Ciaran Tourish (fiddle/whistles) and past members Paul O'Shaughnessy (fiddle) and latest member
Martin Tourish (accordion), Altan strive to share their culture to new, expanding audiences worldwide.
On their new recording, The Widening Gyre, their spiral of music expands, envelopes and includes
friends and music that they have met on the road over their 30 years of touring professionally.
?The hottest group in the Celtic Realm' The Boston Globe
?The Red Crow is a triumphant statement of the virtues of the traditional approach' Q

John and Maggie Carty Album Launch Concert
?Settle Out of Court'
The Fiddler's Elbow
1 Malden Road, London NW5 3HS
7.30pm Doors Open
£10 tickets
Tickets available now at: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/john-and-maggie-carty-album-launch-concert-tickets-33566157280
Fresh from his recent involvement with the Oscar nominated ?Brooklyn' where he
arranged the music and appeared, John Carty is one of the finest names in Irish
traditional music and is well known world wide. Settle out of Court, however, is all
about the next generation of Cartys, and daughter Maggie confidently steps into
the spotlight on both banjo and vocals. Accompaniment on the album is provided
by Shane McGowan on guitar, Dónal Lunny on bouzouki, guitar and bodhrán and
Paul Gurney on bass. The fourteen tracks feature a mixture of waltzes, reels, jigs
and slides, with the inclusion of a number of songs that showcase Maggie's
unique voice. Her rendition of Lough Erne's Shore was included in UK folk
presenter, Mike Harding's own personal choice of the best folk /roots music of
2016 where Mike compared Maggie's voice to the late and great Margaret Barry -
"It's because it's the real deal. Three chords and the truth."
Born in London, John has been living in the Boyle area for the last 25 years and
has become one of the most sought after traditional musicians in the country. In
2003 he was awarded the coveted TG4 Gradam Ceoil - Musician of the Year.
Carty is constantly innovative in his playing, the degree of such innovation sees
that scarcely a bar goes by where he is not seeking a new perspective yet never
wavering from the essence of the given piece. Invention is tirelessly put into
practice and a great deal of expression is turned out of the simplest tune.
Throughout his live shows, great performances of fiddle and banjo are captured
with a sense of unfaltering energy and excitement. There is an uninhibited
atmosphere which shows the audience just how much he is enjoying the musical
moment and invites the audience to share that spontaneous pleasure.
Joining him on stage for a selection of tunes and songs from the album will be his
daughter Maggie who is an accomplished banjo player and fine traditional singer.
She has been described as having found her second home on stage and has a
natural stage talent. It is a hall mark of traditional music that it is handed down
from generation to generation and this father and daughter gig offers the audience
an insight into a living and evolving tradition that spans at least four Carty
generations. As they duet together the sense of trust, honesty, unspoken
understanding and pure devilment in their music will be evident. On stage the duo
have a natural ease with each other and their enjoyment and sense of fun is
palpable and infectious!

Fundraising is continuing for the long term survival of our much loved
Return to Camden Town Festival
Due to various public funding costs and rising costs, reserves and cash flow for the event dwindled -
Major fundraising efforts in 2017 have now made it possible to go ahead with staging the 19th Return to Camden
Town Festival in 2017 but in order to secure the Festival further into the future, we need to
bring additional money in from new sources.
Please do not hesitate to get in touch (by replying to this email) if you, or someone you know
would like to receive information about becoming a sponsor (or donor) of the Festival.
