Subject: Luke who's coming tomorrow!
Hello
Folk Fans
Have you missed us? No of course not there's been so many wonderful
events and musical shenanigans in the area recently what with Sweeps Festival
and Wise Words and City Sound Project etc you won't even have realised we snuck
in a short break. Bizarrely we discovered on returning from four lovely
days in Cornwall that another valued Folk in the Barner/Fairporter - Chris
Houseman was staying on the very same farm near Mevagissey as us, at the
same time and we didn't spot him! I reckon we must share the same good taste
in hol accomm as music. Was there anyone else there that I didn't see?
Well
you know why I'm here in your inbox. We have a simply brilliant concert
for you tomorrow and yes there are still seats needing to be occupied, so this
is your gentle but sincere reminder. Luke Daniels is coming. He is
an amazing musician, we know this because we've seen him play twice for FitB,
both times as a member of the simply world class Cara Dillon Band. He was
also part of the Riverdance Orchestra, and every musician that has recently
visited us and seen his flyer is immediately in awe and says amazing
things about Luke. Anyway he's coming tomorrow to the Black Robin, ( that's the
wonderful cosy pub in the village of Kingston, just off the A2 5 minutes south
of Canterbury) and we have 18 tickets left to sell. Now that doesn't sound much
but believe me they are the most important ones in terms of this 'working'.
So
what is so special about tomorrow's concert...well this.....
...Luke
will be bringing a Polyphon (as well as his usual instruments Guitar, Banjo,
Melodeon and voice) . The Polyphon is a disc-playing music box, a mechanical
device manufactured in Leipzig, Germany in 1880. Disc projections, called
plectra, engage with a series of ratchet-like star wheels, that, when moved
through 40 degrees on their axis, pluck 120 teeth on the instruments bed plate
and comb, these teeth then resonate, sounding predetermined notes. Upon the
musical comb, the fast treble notes are sounded furthest from the centre and the
slower base notes nearest the centre. Newly manufactured 19 and 5/8th inch
diameter steel discs rotate at 1.4 rpm and perform the first new music written
for Polyphon in over a century. You won't get to see one of these every
day.
It
really is going to be a unique and special evening and it would be great to
have a full house for Luke if you're free. Tickets are still available to book
online or you can reserve them and pay the door price tomorrow, there's not a
lot of difference except the extra pence goes to Luke and us rather than
the online agent, it's up to you. All links and info on the website gig
diary page as usual. Here's what the pro's are saying...
From
Andy Cutting on Facebook....Dear facebookers you should go and see this
concert. Luke is an amazing musician and it'll be a wonderful night.
From
Tristan Bryant (Fairport Convention Agent) This really is worth catching
next Wednesday (in Liverpool). Have you seen a Polyphon?
Sunday
night
Black Robin Inn, Kingston, Canterbury
Doors 6pm, concert starts 6.30pm
Online £12, Offline (dosh through my door before the night) £13, Door
£14
If
we sometimes are a few minutes late opening the doors at the Robin it's
because just two hours earlier when we arrive to set up, we sometimes can't
start straight away because of Sunday lunch diners still finishing off their
puds and coffees in what is after all a restaurant! We do our best but it's a
mad rush to turn a restaurant into a theatre in just two hours.
Other News...
Most exciting new first... Please put 7th April 2018 in your diaries now and
I'll tell you why later on.
Daphne's
Flight
-There's a wonderful new video clip from the Daphne's Flight girls HERE
I've put it on their diary page too. This is a tiny glimpse of what
you're in for if you're coming along to the Gulbenkian next Friday. Still
loads and loads of tickets available. Please come along and tell your friends -
it'll be another special night. A good one to bring some newbies to I think.
There really shouldn't be a seat left in the house for this.
Joe
Topping & Scott Poley - We have one more date to add to the Summer programme.
Lovely Joe Topping who some of you may have seen at the Black Robin a few years
ago solo, or in the Kingston Barn with Elbow Jane, or maybe somewhere as
a member of Ashley Hutching's Rainbow Chasers, is coming to do a House concert
on Sunday 17th July at a special location in Barham. We have been offered the
use of a beautiful spacious house in the centre of the village for this
occasion, the address will be given out to those reserving a space. This
will be late afternoon relaxed social event - hopefully outdoors if the weather
is good. Bring a picnic for the long interval/supper break and we'll
provide a kettle etc!
Joe, who Chris While described as 'having the best voice on the folk scene',
will be playing with his musical partner Scott Poley who plays a mean slide
guitar. This was Joe in the Barn back in 2013 HERE
Doors 4.30pm, Concert starts 5pm. Voluntary contributions of £15 are suggested
(half price for youngsters) More info to follow on the website.
Well
we're off to Hastings in a bit for day two of the new Fairport Spring
Tour. Day one in Beckenham went very well last night. Good to see some of
you there and hear that you're coming to see them in Sandwich as well.
What troopers!
Have
a great weekend whatever you're doing, hope to see you tomorrow night at the
Rockin Robin.
