A Star Turn at Sidmouth FolkWeek

Scottish singing star
Barbara Dickson sets a classy tone for Sidmouth FolkWeek (4th - 11th August 2017) with a fantastic acoustic pre-festival concert with Nick Holland (plus support from Dorset favourites Ninebarrow) on Thursday 3rd Aug at 8pm.

"I love Barbara Dickson?. she's just a one off."  Billy Connolly

Emerging from the Scottish folk scene of the late 1960s, Barbara has enjoyed massive mainstream chart success with a catalogue of hits including Another Suitcase in Another Hall and the million-selling number one single, I Know Him So Well. As Scotland's best-selling female album artist, she has earned 6 platinum, 11 gold and 7 silver albums, cementing her status as one of the UK's best-loved performers

In this special acoustic performance at Sidmouth, Barbara explores her catalogue of songs at an intimate level with the support of her pianist Nick Holland. The pair let the words and melodies take centre stage as they perform a wonderful range of material that draws on Barbara's folk roots, her latest exploration of the songs of Gerry Rafferty, and some of her classic hit records.

We caught up with Barbara recently to ask her about her career and her debut appearance at Sidmouth FolkWeek.

"I am honoured to be invited to such an auspicious festival. I'm sure it'll be worth the journey from Edinburgh. I am also sure to be meeting some old friends there and I pray the weather will be glorious for everyone to add to the fabulous music on offer! I have played most recently in Truro in Cornwall and rarely visit the South West apart from there. I love it though and adore the hedges of Devon and the beautiful coastline. I cannot wait to play with Nick Holland for the famously kind and hospitable Sidmouth crowd, whose fame has travelled to Scotland!"

"I am loving my music at the moment. I've completed a big UK tour so far this year with my band and done some shows with Nick Holland whom Sidmouth knows from his work with Maddy Prior. We work as a duo when not playing with Troy Donockley, Brad Lang and Russell Field. I have my latest EP produced by Troy called Five Songs and will be featuring some of those during my dates with Nick in 2017. We are touring together in September-October featuring an organic approach to music old and new. The prospect is wonderful"

Dickson's career began in the folk clubs of Fife and Edinburgh, and throughout the UK folk club scene. That immersion in folk music has influenced her music and the rest of her career.

"People always say to me that they hear the storytelling of folk song in my singing and even throughout my pop/theatre career, this was my hallmark. I still refer to my book of Child Ballads for inspiration in music to this day."

With so many awards and accolades over the years for her brilliant singing and acting achievements, Dickson reflects on what she is most proud of in her career:

"I think my two Olivier Awards for my work in the theatre are pretty special and of course my OBE. But my acquaintances and influences from my early days in folk song clubs has completely shaped me and my musical tastes."

It's going to be a night to remember for sure.
