Arthur Pita presents

The Little Match Girl

Wed 6 - Sun 10 December
Gulbenkian, Canterbury

This festive season, The Little Match Girl comes to the Gulbenkian from Wednesday 6 - Sunday 10 December 2017. With magical songs and beautiful imagery this is a charming wintry tale that will delight audiences.

Following a sell-out season at Sadler's Wells last year, celebrated director and choreographer Arthur Pita returns to Gulbenkian with his magical dance theatre show The Little Match Girl.

Based on Hans Christian Andersen's classic story, this touching tale of an impoverished young street girl's hopes and dreams is beautifully told through dance, song and original music performed live on stage.

A snowy stage sets the scene for an icy cold Christmas Eve. Pacing the darkening streets with just one final match flame to keep her warm, the little amtch girl sees a vision of her beloved Grandmother, who guides her up into the night sky, to the shining moon. Now, on a clear night, if you look closely, you might see the light of a shooting star, or is it a match burning brightly?

Arthur Pita's innovative and spell-binding approach to storytelling has excited huge critical and public acclaim. Recent successes include: A Dream Within A Midsummer Night's Dream for Ballet Black for which he was nominated for the 2014 Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance.
