January 2018: A 1-Day Wassail Pilgrimage from Wickham
to Southwick Priory ? 6.5 miles

'Wassail'
When the family feasting's done, there's
one more Christmas tradition to remember...
Etymology:
From the Anglo-Saxon greeting, W?s
?u h?l,
meaning "be thou hale" ? "be in good
health".
Definition:
1.
To toast, to drink to the health of another.
2. To drink wassail.
3. To go from house to house in deep winter, singing songs.
History:
Wassailing is traditionally celebrated
on
Twelfth Night (variously 5th & 6th January). It was initiated
in the middle ages as a form of recipient-initiated charitable
giving, in which peasants would sing at the doors of their feudal
lords, and were rewarded with seasonal gifts.
In January 2018, the BPT are singing it back into the Hampshire
pilgrimage landscape.

January 2018
On
Twelfth Night, 6th January, Will and Guy will be
guiding a group of Pilgrims from Wickham to Southwick, a distance
of 6.5 miles, following the maxim: "Minimum Roads,
Maximum Holy". The route makes up part of the Old Way ? one
of the most ancient pilgrim paths in Britain, re-discovered by
the BPT while researching the Gough Map.
|
|
|
Pilgrims
attending this event will learn a traditional 'Feast of Fools' /
Epiphany song ? recreating it, in the land, by singing to
strangers' homes and to trees.
|
|
|
We
will drink deeply (non-alcoholic options available), sing
sweetly, tread consciously upon ancient pathways, welcoming in
the New Year in a very old (and new) way.
Tickets are ?50
each, or bring a friend for ?80 between you.
|
|
|
Concessions
available on request.
Attending
one of the BPT's Guided Pilgrimages is your way to support the
charity: the cost of tickets directly helps the trust to spread
the good of Pilgrimage further.

We look forward to
meeting you on the path... Merry Christmas one and all!
"We know by the moon
That we are not too soon,
And we know by the sky
That we are not too high.
We know by the stars
That we are not too far,
And we know by the ground
That we are within sound"
? Gower Wassail ?
