Smithsonian Folkways Turns 70

Folkways Records 70th Anniversary and Membership

In 2018, Smithsonian Folkways Recordings will celebrate our foundational collection, Folkways Records (est. 1948), on its 70th anniversary. Its mission, to document the "people's music," and sounds from all around the world, coupled with the Smithsonian's directive to increase understanding among people and support cultural diversity, remains as vital and relevant as ever. As you know, Folkways is well-known as the home for iconic recordings of Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly, Pete Seeger, Elizabeth Cotten, and thousands of others. But 2018 will also be about our future as we mark our 70th anniversary with a year-long celebration, boasting a fresh vision from Smithsonian Folkways Director Huib Schippers, a burgeoning membership program, and a multitude of albums, projects, and artist collaborations in the works. We hope you will celebrate with us throughout 2018 as we draw from and connection to our past, and do so in bold new ways.

Become a Member

As we close out the year, we invite you to join our membership program. It opens up new ways to engage with the label's vast body of recorded music and sounds, its history, and the people involved along the way. Many of you have been part of our extended community for decades; now the Smithsonian Folkways Membership provides the opportunity to receive exclusive awards, forge stronger bonds, and support our commitment to diverse musical traditions, cultural dialogue, and documenting and preserving our vast catalog for generations to come. Your support will enable us to continue producing albums that delight the ears, stimulate the mind, and contribute to social debates that are as urgent today as when Moe Asch founded the label in 1948. We hope you will continue to engage with us and be part of Smithsonian Folkways' future. Become part of the Folkways family by becoming a member today: visiting us at: https://folkways.si.edu/membership
