RAB NOAKES
is a force to be reckoned within the world of music in Scotland and
beyond. Joining forces with life long friend and acclaimed Americana
singer songwriter Jill Jackson, together
travelling across the UK, creating an undeniable evening of enchanting,
stripped back and captivating musical event, their performances
consistently brilliant, equal parts emotive and entertaining.
Although a generation apart they have worked and sung together for over
20 years. Expect a rich collection of songs, self-penned alongside
innovative interpretations. Each of them is an enthusiastic
collaborator as well as an accomplished soloist. The combination of
their voices, their wit and their obvious and infectious love of
singing they make a sparkling combination with a great sound. They
demonstrate the value of how different experiences can make a whole
that's more than the sum of the parts.
"It was a bold move by Rab Noakes to cover ?Only Happy
When It Rains' in the first place. I don't mind admitting that my heart
sank when I initially saw the track on the album running order. But Rab
has transformed the song brilliantly. It's almost as if the vocal
harmonies - with Jill Jackson, have had to be gently teased out of
both. And that's the real appeal. The result is sublime. An inspired
cover. There used to be one great version of ?Only Happy When It Rains'
... now there are two."

Are We There Yet? is the long awaited 5th solo album by Paisley born
singer songwriter Jill
Jackson, a record that bears the hallmarks of a 25 year
musical
journey that has taken her from Paisley to Top of The Pops to playing
in every State of America (50 States in 50 Days.....yes really!). Jill
temporarily relocated to Nashville where she became immersed in Music
City's culture of storytelling song-writing. Personal struggles and a
bucket list hike of the Grand Canyon saw the Celtic Connections award
winning artist return overflowing with lyrical and musical inspiration.
These momentous changes of life and reflective nature flow through
every word and note of the 10 new songs on Are We There Yet? - an
uplifting, accomplished, mature record. Produced by Boo Hewerdine (Eddi
Reader, Emily Barker), the album combines innovative, playful
arrangements that would not sound out of place in Lindy Hop, Harlem or
the heart of the deep South. With an unabashed embrace of gleeful,
melodic choruses delivered in Jill's unmistakeable warm and
heart-wrenching voice.

Early
in 2015 Rab was diagnosed with tonsillar cancer. The treatment that
followed was, to say the least, rigorous. At the earliest opportunity
he was playing the guitar and singing. New songs began to emerge, songs
that were based on the experience of the treatment and formed a
significant role in the recovery process. Six of them are gathered on
Rab's new release - The
Treatment Tapes. There's no self-pity though, here you'll
find defiance, resilience, love, support and wit. In May of 2017 Rab
turns 70 and celebrates the 50th anniversary of his first
properly-billed, paid gig. These landmarks will be celebrated
throughout next year, across the country and beyond.
Rab's
previous release was the acclaimed double-CD ?I'm walkin' here'.
During 2016 he has been found on tour, mainly solo, promoting that
album. He has
also been found in collaboration with others and in his part as a
singer and guitar-player in the ?Grit' orchestra which played at both
WOMAD and Edinburgh International Festivals.
The
year has also seen collaboration with a long-time colleague Barbara
Dickson as well as a part in the Neil Young tribute night in Glasgow ?Long may you run'.
The ?I'm
walkin' here' album, which features many new Rab new songs
alongside some characteristically interestingly wide-ranging
interpretations, was received with high praise in reviews and has
attracted positive comment from audience and journalists alike.
