Weekly News

Quiz Night // The Desert Turkeys // Pass The Cat // Vlad Miller & Notes From The Underground

Good afternoon to you all! We bring news from the revolving doors of The Lighthouse.

Now I wanted to give a little advance notice on a monster of a show coming to the stage in two weeks. Its a ticketed one, so here are the details ...

Diabel Cissokho (Full Band Show!)
Thursday 23rd April
Tickets ?9 in advance, available behind the bar and online HERE.
(Tickets ?11 on the door, subject to availability)

Senegalese musician Diabel Cissokho is part of the great line of Cissokho griots. Growing up in Dakar, surrounded by a rich musical heritage and a family of musicians, Diabel began playing a number of traditional instruments. However, Diabel's affinity with the kora was clear from an early age.

Diabel's musical pedigree is exceptional. International tours with his family's band Bannaya led to a long stint as Baaba Maal's kora player, as well as with acclaimed musicians such as Kandia Kouyate, Pee Wee Ellis, Nuru Kane, Daby Balde, Omar Pene and Abdou Diop. Now well established in the UK, Diabel's virtuosic talent, his "resonant voice and rocking kora style" (Songlines), have been welcomed everywhere from WOMAD and Glastonbury to London's Barbican, where he performed alongside Femi Kuti, Cheikh Lo and Manu Dibango.

Diabel's success with bluesman Ramon Goose cemented his reputation as a versatile musician, able to effortlessly cross cultures. Their album Mansana Blues was lauded as:

"a flavoursome mix of slide guitar, mellow kora and undulating Mandinka rhythms" (fRoots) which "delivers moments of steamy pleasure" (Songlines).

This Saturday we host two events! Our 'Jazz & Pies' afternoon session and the amazing Pass The Cat in the evening!

Saturday 11th April

Pass The Cat

Live music from 8:30pm

FREE ENTRY

The collective continue to build on their reputation as a premier groove band. The super solid rhythm section of Liam, Nana & Colin underpins Steve's vocals and acoustic guitar, and the whole thing is topped off with the delicious electric guitar work of Richard Blasco. The music, mainly original material, but including some carefully chosen covers, defies categorization, although the band refer to it as "Rhythm Suction". Check it out for yourself and see why.

Jazz & Pies

Pub open from 12pm // Live music from 1pm

FREE ENTRY

Saturday welcomes back the monthly ?Jazz & Pies' afternoon session, consisting of The Lighthouse house band featuring bass, drums and keys. Horn players, singers and guitarists are welcome to sit in with our resident rhythm section. This session has fast become a popular date in The Lighthouse calendar. A pie meal plus a pint of cask ale or small glass of house wine can be purchased for ?10.

Friday 10th April

The Desert Turkeys

Pub open from 5pm // Dolly from 8:30pm

FREE ENTRY

The band has gained a local following for their songs of love and nocturnal intrigue. Imagine early Tom Waits compositions, which forego the piano in favour of the six-string nylon acoustic guitar.  The trio's intentions are to deliver music that is spirited and lyrical. Their playing is measured by a certain gritty, restrained melancholy - the music aims for a dynamic that is filmic and atmospheric.

Sunday 12th April
'Sunday Service' feat.
Vlad Miller & Notes From The Underground
Pub open from 12pm // Music from 4pm
FREE ENTRY

Vlad Miller & Notes From The Underground

They perform original compositions by the pianist Vladimir Miller whose writing is largely stimulated by jazz, Eastern European and Russian music traditions. Strong melodies weave into jazz improvisation influenced by composers such as Igor Stavinsky, Steve Reich and Paul Bley. Their live performances are engaging, exciting and often unexpected.

Plus ?. We are pleased to announce the inclusion of the Reggae Roast! Delicious tastes of the Caribbean mixed with the traditional English roast dinner, at an incredible price of ?7.50! Chef Tyrone will be serving you from 12pm. Relax and eat while enjoying some reggae tunes at a volume that is proven to aid digestion and stimulate taste buds.

This is to be a regular fixture as part of our weekly ?Sunday Service'. Leave the cooking to Tyrone and join us here!
Due to popular demand, booking a table is very much recommended.
